2026 Submarine Cable Deployments
Overview
In late July 2026, two separate submarine cable projects were announced to strengthen regional digital connectivity.
On 28 July, Canalink began laying a 553 km optical-fiber ring, known as Project RING, linking the eastern Canary Islands (Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, and Fuerteventura). This €34 million initiative is largely funded by the EU’s Connecting Europe Facility (€23 million) and will utilize two independent routes to provide redundancy and increased capacity for local operators, businesses, and public administrations while adhering to environmental regulations.
On 31 July, Venezuela’s state telecom CANTV and Barbados-based Liberty Networks revealed the Fénix cable, a 378 km link from Camurí (La Guaira) to Willemstad, Curaçao. The system will provide a minimum capacity of 14 Tbps and sub-four-millisecond latency. Fénix is designed to interconnect with CANTV’s existing Festoon system and integrate into Liberty’s regional ecosystem—including the ARCOS, EC-Link, Jerry Newton, and PCCS cables—as well as linking to the major network access point in Miami. The project aims to diversify international data routes and improve internet resilience for Venezuelan users.
On 9 August, CANTV and Liberty Networks confirmed the launch of the Fénix system. The project will utilize advanced Submarine Line Terminal Equipment (SLTE) to support 100G and 400G interfaces. The new interconnection node is expected to serve Venezuela's capital region, which manages over 40% of the country's international traffic, thereby improving service response times and digital connectivity.
Both initiatives reflect a broader push in 2026 to expand submarine-cable infrastructure, enhancing redundancy, speed, and economic competitiveness in their respective regions: the European Union’s outer islands and the Caribbean-South American corridor.
