Canary Islands implement new social, labor, and development policies
The Canary Islands government and regional institutions are implementing several administrative and social measures. The Parliament of the Canary Islands unanimously approved an initiative requesting the Spanish government to fund the transport costs of deceased patients who were moved from their home islands to other facilities due to a lack of local medical resources.
In terms of labor and administration, the regional government signed an agreement with six unions to establish a professional career path for approximately 13,000 public employees, a measure expected to cost 40 million euros by 2030. Additionally, the Canary Islands Employment Service (SCE) has opened extraordinary lists for the temporary hiring of teaching and coordination staff for various training and employment programs across seven professional sectors.
Regarding economic development, a new regulation for the Canary Islands Development Fund (FDCAN) has been approved, establishing a financial framework of 1.626 billion euros over the next decade to fund infrastructure and development projects. Meanwhile, recent reports indicate that while poverty risk in the region has decreased slightly, the Canary Islands remains among the most affected areas in Spain, particularly regarding severe material and social deprivation.
