Canary Islands face rising temperatures and calima

The Canary Islands are facing a significant rise in temperatures due to the arrival of a warm, dry air mass from the Sahara. According to meteorological forecasts, maximum temperatures are expected to climb throughout the week, with some areas potentially reaching 36 °C by Thursday.

Fuerteventura has been placed under a yellow heat warning, with temperatures expected to hit 34 °C in its southern interior. Similar high temperatures are anticipated in Lanzarote and southeastern Gran Canaria. The heatwave will be accompanied by calima (dust haze), particularly in the eastern islands.

In addition to the heat, the region may experience isolated thunderstorms and light precipitation, especially in the highlands of Tenerife and the eastern islands. Tenerife may also see strong wind gusts in its central mountain ranges. Cloud cover at middle and high levels is expected to be prevalent across much of the archipelago.
