Canary Islands and Spain face extreme heat and forest fire risks
Extreme heat and atmospheric dust (calima) are affecting the Canary Islands and mainland Spain. In the Canary Islands, temperatures have reached 40 degrees Celsius in Maspalomas and nearly 40 degrees in Lanzarote. The presence of calima is expected to persist through Thursday, though a gradual moderation of temperatures is forecasted to begin mid-week.
Due to the high temperatures, low humidity, and moderate winds, the Government of the Canary Islands has expanded forest fire risk alerts to include La Palma, La Gomera, and El Hierro, joining Tenerife and Gran Canaria. Gran Canaria remains under a high alert status for extreme heat.
In mainland Spain, ten autonomous communities are under heat alerts, with orange warnings active in parts of Andalusia and Catalonia. Some regions may see temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius, particularly near the Guadalquivir area.
In Venezuela, health authorities have issued warnings regarding rising temperatures attributed to the ‘Súper Niño’ phenomenon, which is also causing rainfall deficits and lower humidity levels across the country.
