Canary Islands faces funding warnings and energy delays
Political and economic tensions are rising in the Canary Islands regarding both regional funding and energy policy. Ángel Víctor Torres, the Minister of Territorial Policy and PSOE leader in the archipelago, has warned that the region could lose 1.3 billion euros annually in regional financing if the PP governs Spain following the November 29 elections. This figure is based on calculations from the Council for Fiscal and Financial Policy regarding the current distribution framework.
Simultaneously, regional authorities are pressuring the central government to accelerate offshore wind energy development. Mariano Hernández Zapata, the Counselor for Ecological Transition and Energy, has accused the state of delaying the first offshore wind auction. He is calling for a concrete timeline to allow for investments, specifically requesting that projects begin in Gran Canaria to address the region's declared energy emergency.
