Canary Islands government issues rainfall pre-alert

The Government of the Canary Islands, through the General Directorate of Emergencies, has issued a pre-alert for heavy rainfall across El Hierro, La Palma, La Gomera, Tenerife, and Gran Canaria. The alert, effective from 12:00 PM on Tuesday, October 6, follows data from the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) and is part of the Specific Emergency Plan for Adverse Meteorological Phenomena (PEFMA).

Forecasts indicate intense rainfall driven by high tropical humidity and relief-induced convection, particularly during afternoons and early morning hours. Gran Canaria may see accumulations of up to 40 millimeters in 12 hours, with rainfall concentrated in northern and eastern midlands and summits. Tenerife and El Hierro are also expected to experience intense precipitation, with up to 20 millimeters per hour in northern, northeastern, and southern high-altitude areas.

While La Palma and La Gomera are also expected to receive rain in their northern and eastern midlands, the likelihood of extreme intensity is considered lower for those islands.
