Canary Islands Government Seeks Aena Meeting Over Airport Bus Access Changes
The Transport and Mobility Ministry of the Canary Islands, led by Minister María Fernández, has formally requested a meeting with airport operator Aena before the end of July. The request follows operational problems that arose after a new system for bus (guagua) access and parking was introduced at the islands’ airports.
The regional government argues that the bus service is the only mass public‑transport option linking airports to key urban and tourist areas, and that any restrictions could increase private‑vehicle traffic and undermine sustainability goals. The ministry has repeatedly warned Aena since December 2022, sought a temporary suspension of the changes, and called for a session of the Airport Coordination Commission to devise a solution. While Aena has indicated a postponement of the measures, the Canary Islands authorities report receiving no concrete updates.
The dispute occurs amid a broader investment of more than £1.8 billion in airport infrastructure in the archipelago, underscoring the importance of aligning airport operations with regional transport policies.
