Canary Islands issue pre-alert for intense dust storm

The Government of the Canary Islands has declared a pre-alert status for all islands due to an incoming dust storm, known locally as calima. The measure was activated by the Directorate General of Emergencies following reports from the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet).

Initial impacts are expected in the mid-altitudes and southern slopes of the mountainous islands, with particulate matter concentrations potentially exceeding 100 micrograms per cubic meter. While the dust will initially remain at higher altitudes in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, conditions are expected to intensify in lower elevations across all islands starting Tuesday.

Wednesday is forecasted to be the most intense day of the episode, with widespread concentrations of suspended particles expected to surpass 100 micrograms per cubic meter. Authorities have warned that the phenomenon may trigger or worsen health issues, particularly for individuals with chronic respiratory conditions, and advise following official self-protection guidelines.
