Canary Islands Named Social Economy Capital 2027 Amid PSOE’s Parliamentary Review

The Spanish Socialist Party (PSOE) in the Canary Islands celebrated the designation of the archipelago as the Capital of the Social Economy for 2027, the first time the title will be shared between Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Santa Cruz de Tenerife. PSOE spokesperson Elena Máñez highlighted the achievement as recognition of legislation passed in 2022, including the Canary Islands Social Economy Law and the first Cooperatives Law, which she says have modernised the framework for cooperative and labour‑society enterprises.

At the same time, the PSOE parliamentary group presented a three‑year performance review of the coalition government, questioning the effectiveness of the region’s tourism tax, the over‑burdening of health‑care staff, the reliability of electricity supply, and delays in the justice system. The group also called for a unified transport ticket across the islands and scrutinised the government's fiscal and ecological policies.
