Canary Islands social‑economy and tourism debate

In late July 2026 the Canary Islands were highlighted as the 2027 Capital of the Social Economy, a distinction celebrated by the regional PSOE. The party used the occasion to launch a three‑year performance review of the coalition government, questioning the tourism tax, health‑care staffing pressures, electricity reliability, justice delays and calling for a unified transport ticket.

A few days later, the public bank Cajasiete and the archipelago’s Enotourism Cluster signed an agreement to promote wine‑related tourism as a way to diversify the economy and create rural jobs. At the same time, the Nueva Canarias coalition warned that the surge in tourist revenue on Lanzarote was not improving residents’ living standards, demanding a “Pacto Insular por el Salario Digno” that would tie tourism aid to higher wages, permanent contracts and professional training.
