Spain coordinates regional demands for future EU agricultural and fisheries policies
Spanish regional governments and the central government are coordinating to negotiate the future Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) for the 2028-2034 period with the European Union. Key objectives include securing a robust, independent budget and ensuring that the specific needs of different territories are addressed.
Regional leaders from Andalusia, Galicia, and the Canary Islands are advocating for greater autonomy in managing funds and specialized treatments for ultra-peripheral regions. Specifically, the Canary Islands are calling for the POSEI program to maintain its own financial identity to offset high costs related to insularity and distance. In Andalusia, officials are demanding that state-level tax exemptions for disaster relief funds be extended to regional aid to ensure full resources reach primary sector producers.
In the fisheries sector, there are significant concerns regarding the potential reduction of European aid and the need for more flexible regulations to allow for fleet modernization and generational renewal. Meanwhile, agricultural organizations like ASAJA have warned that rising production costs and bureaucracy are threatening the viability of rural life.
