Canary Islands Parliament rejects ideological journalist lists
The Parliament of the Canary Islands has unanimously approved an initiative by the People's Party (PP) to reject the creation of public documents or lists that classify journalists based on their political ideology.
The initiative aims to defend press freedom and the citizens' right to receive truthful, objective, and pluralistic information. Rebeca Paniagua, a deputy and professional journalist who spearheaded the motion, argued that the role of journalism is to question, contrast sources, and hold power accountable to ensure citizens can form their own opinions.
Paniagua described the necessity of bringing this matter to Parliament as “scandalous, very grave and even painful,” stating that the initiative seeks to preserve fundamental rights rather than granting privileges to specific media outlets.
