Canary Islands Parliament dispute over journalist lists
Overview
The Parliament of the Canary Islands has unanimously approved an initiative to condemn the creation of ideological lists of journalists. These lists allegedly originated from a February 2024 document by the Ministry of the Interior’s Communication Office, which reportedly profiled hundreds of journalists and collaborators based on their political affinity or critical stance toward the government.
Parliamentary members denounced the inclusion of assessments regarding political orientation and editorial positioning, arguing such practices are incompatible with institutional neutrality and press freedom. Deputy Rebeca Paniagua, a professional journalist, described the situation as “scandalous, very grave and even painful,” emphasizing that the initiative seeks to protect the citizens’ right to truthful and pluralistic information.
The matter is currently under investigation by the Spanish Data Protection Agency.
