Canary Islands Parliament rejects ideological lists of journalists

The Parliament of the Canary Islands has unanimously approved a statement condemning the creation of ideological lists of journalists by the Ministry of the Interior. The initiative follows reports of a February 2024 document from the Ministry’s Communication Office that allegedly profiled hundreds of journalists and collaborators based on their political affinity or critical stance toward the government.

The agreement denounces the inclusion of assessments regarding political orientation, editorial positioning, or attitudes toward government actions in such lists, citing incompatibility with institutional neutrality and press freedom. The matter is currently under investigation by the Spanish Data Protection Agency.

During the debate, discussions also touched upon the neutrality of public media in the archipelago, specifically RTVC, though an amendment to include specific references to the entity was rejected.
