Canary Islands political coalition faces internal tensions

Political tensions are rising within the governing coalition of the Canary Islands, involving Coalición Canaria (CC) and the Partido Popular (PP). In Lanzarote, CC has requested a follow-up meeting with its partner, the PP, to address growing discrepancies regarding local administration and technical offices.

On a broader regional level, Luis Campos, Secretary General of Nueva Canarias-Bloque Canarista (NC-BC), has criticized the unity between CC and the PP as an ‘absolute farce.’ This criticism follows a shift in the regional government's stance regarding a new autonomous financing proposal. While CC has moved to support the central government's proposal, the PP's commitment has been questioned due to the repeated absence of the regional Finance Minister, Matilde Asián, from key fiscal and financial policy meetings.

Additionally, in La Palma, the political group Contigo La Palma has voiced strong opposition to the tourism development model promoted by CC, PP, and PSOE. The group warns that specific projects, such as the Puerto Naos tourism planning instrument and the El Remo-La Zamora road variant, threaten the island's coastline, landscape, and agricultural land through urban expansion.
