Canary Islands reform development fund and launch demographic strategy
The Government of the Canary Islands has reached an agreement to reform the Canary Islands Development Fund (Fdcan) for the 2026-2036 period. The new model introduces annual project reviews to prevent funds from being blocked due to delays or unfavorable reports. This flexibility allows delayed projects to be reassigned to different years or replaced by ready-to-execute alternatives.
Resource allocation for the new Fdcan is structured as follows: 50% for public works, 35% for socio-sanitary infrastructure, and 15% for innovation, development, and research. Employment serves as a transversal axis across all lines. Co-financing models will vary by island to promote territorial cohesion, with the regional government providing higher coverage for smaller islands like La Gomera and El Hierro.
In a separate initiative to address demographic challenges, the regional government and the Canary Islands Municipal Federation (Fecam) have launched training sessions to implement the Canary Islands Demographic Challenge Strategy. These sessions aim to align regional planning with the specific needs of local municipalities by involving technical experts and political leaders from various territories, including Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, and Fuerteventura.
