Canary Islands road agreements vital for territorial cohesion
Casimiro Curbelo, president of the Cabildo, has emphasized the necessity of road agreements between the Canary Islands and the Spanish State to ensure territorial cohesion and access to services. Due to the archipelago's fragmented geography and lack of high-speed rail, road infrastructure serves as a vital instrument for equality among citizens.
The current agreement provides a maximum funding of 1,448 million euros with an execution horizon extended to 2030. However, most of these resources are already committed. Curbelo argues for the early preparation of a new investment cycle to ensure continuity from 2027 and to provide the necessary certainty for local councils to plan and coordinate infrastructure projects.
