Canoas and Porto Alegre invest in flood protection infrastructure

Authorities in Canoas and Porto Alegre are advancing major infrastructure projects to mitigate flood risks following extreme weather events.

In Canoas, the municipal government has authorized the construction of two new pump houses, designated as Casas de Bombas 9 and 10, in the Pôlder Mato Grande area. The project represents a R$ 75 million investment funded by the federal government through the Infrastructure Support Fund for Recovery and Adaptation to Extreme Climatic Events (FIRECE). These structures will be integrated into the Dique Araçá to enhance drainage capacity and strengthen the city's protection against flooding.

In Porto Alegre, the Municipal Department of Water and Sewage (Dmae) is nearing the completion of high-capacity floating pump installations in the Anchieta and Sarandi neighborhoods. This work involves protecting two polders through large-diameter polyethylene pipes that will pump rainwater into the Gravataí River. The current protection works for polders 7 and 8 cost R$ 66 million. Additionally, a definitive protection project for the region is being drafted with an estimated cost of R$ 300 million, which includes the construction of two new rainwater pumping stations.
