Canonical delays Ubuntu 24.04 to 26.04 upgrade

Canonical has temporarily delayed the direct upgrade path from Ubuntu 24.04 LTS to Ubuntu 26.04 LTS. Although the first point release, version 26.04.1, is already available, the upgrade option for 24.04 users is not yet visible.

Oliver Reiche of Canonical stated that the delay is a technical decision intended to ensure system stability. The company needs to implement several backports to address regressions found in a recent version of ‘rust-coreutils’, which are fundamental system utilities rewritten in the Rust programming language.

Users currently running Ubuntu 25.10 are unaffected, as their upgrade paths were released in April. For those on Ubuntu 24.04, the official upgrade option is expected to become available in early September. While a command-line workaround using the development flag exists, it is not officially sanctioned and carries potential risks.
