Ubuntu 26.04 LTS release and upgrade status
Overview
Canonical released Ubuntu 26.04.1 LTS, also known as ‘Resolute Raccoon’, which provided refreshed installation media and opened the upgrade path from Ubuntu 24.04 LTS. This release focused on stability, including fixes for GNOME Shell and Wayland.
However, Canonical subsequently delayed the direct upgrade path from Ubuntu 24.04 LTS to Ubuntu 26.04 LTS. Oliver Reiche of Canonical described the delay as a technical decision to ensure stability, noting the need to implement backports to address regressions in ‘rust-coreutils’. While the upgrade option was not immediately visible for 24.04 users, it was expected to become available in early September.
