Canton daycare parents charged after toddler brings loaded gun to classroom

Parents of a 3-year-old boy face criminal charges after the child brought a loaded Glock pistol to the Children’s World Early Learning Center in Canton Township, Michigan. The firearm was discovered inside a backpack in a classroom on Monday morning. A teacher intervened and secured the weapon, which was in a holster, preventing any injuries.

Brandon John Ely, 28, a Detroit-area police officer, has been charged with one count of fourth-degree child abuse. Rabab Ibrahim Al Zayad, 27, faces one count of unsafe storage. The parents were arraigned in Plymouth’s 35th District Court.

Canton Police Chief Joseph Bialy described the surveillance footage of the incident as “shocking” and “hard to watch.” The daycare center has since unenrolled the family and announced new safety protocols, including searching student backpacks. The incident has renewed local discussions regarding parental responsibility and firearm storage laws in Michigan.
