Michigan daycare firearm incident and parental charges

A three-year-old boy brought a loaded Glock pistol to the Children’s World Early Learning Center in Canton, Michigan, after retrieving it from a Mickey Mouse backpack. Security footage showed the child sharing the weapon with other children before a teacher intervened and secured the firearm. No injuries were reported.

Following the incident, the child's parents were indicted. The father, a Detroit-area police officer, faces one count of fourth-degree child abuse, which carries a potential sentence of up to one year in prison. The mother, the registered owner of the firearm, faces charges of unsafe or insecure firearm storage, an offense punishable by up to 93 days in jail. Both parents have pleaded not guilty, and a pre-trial hearing is scheduled for October 30.

The Detroit Police Department has placed the father on administrative duty without firearm privileges pending the investigation. Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy noted that the incident “could have resulted in a much more severe tragedy.”

In response to the event, the daycare facility has implemented new security measures, including the inspection of all backpacks brought onto the premises by children or parents.
