CANTV and Liberty Networks launch Fénix submarine cable linking Venezuela to Curaçao
State telecom CANTV and Barbados‑based Liberty Networks announced a strategic partnership to build a new 378‑kilometre submarine cable system named Fénix. The cable will run from Camurí in Venezuela’s La Guaira state to Willemstad in Curaçao, providing a minimum ring capacity of 14 terabits per second and a latency of under four milliseconds on the direct route.
Fénix will interconnect with CANTV’s existing Festoon cable and integrate into Liberty Networks’ regional submarine ecosystem, including ARCOS, EC‑Link, Jerry Newton and PCCS, as well as linking to the major NAP in Miami. The project aims to diversify international data routes, improve resilience against outages, and deliver faster, more reliable internet access across Venezuela. No financial details or an inauguration date were disclosed. Ray Collins, senior vice‑president of Infrastructure and Corporate Strategy at Liberty Latin America and CEO of Liberty Networks, said the initiative “strengthens international connectivity” for Venezuela, while M. Colmenares, vice‑president of Technology and Infrastructure at CANTV, highlighted its importance for the country’s central region.
