Capcom revives Onimusha series with Way of the Sword after 20-year gap

Capcom is releasing a new entry in its Onimusha samurai‑action series, **Onimusha: Way of the Sword**, on September 4 2026 for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC. The game follows legendary swordsman Miyamoto Musashi battling demonic Genma in an Edo‑period Kyoto setting and re‑introduces series staples such as the Oni Gauntlet and the Issen parry mechanic.

Director Satoru Nihei explained that the two‑decade hiatus was caused by internal resource competition: during the PlayStation 3/Xbox 360 era, Capcom’s other flagship franchises—Monster Hunter, Resident Evil and Street Fighter—absorbed most of the development talent. The RE Engine and a focus on those titles delayed any new Onimusha project. The new title does not continue the story of previous games, but it includes visual homages to classic enemies such as the Reynaldo‑Genma and Bazuu, offering long‑time fans recognizable nods without requiring prior series knowledge.
