Capcom reveals gameplay, audio and design details for upcoming Onimusha: Way of the Sword
Capcom announced that the long‑awaited sequel Onimusha: Way of the Sword will launch on 4 September 2026 for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2. Set in Kyoto during the Edo period of 1624, the game follows legendary samurai Miyamoto Musashi, who wields the Oni Glove to battle a demonic invasion, while his rival Sasaki Ganryu serves as a flamboyant antagonist.
The title departs from the series’ traditionally linear structure, adopting a “wide‑linear” design that lets players explore large sections of Kyoto, take on optional side‑quests, discover hidden bosses and interact with numerous NPCs. Although not an open‑world game, the semi‑open zones provide far more freedom than previous entries.
Capcom’s audio team, led by director Shunichi Suwa, forged a special custom katana with a thick, S‑shaped blade to capture a raw, gritty sword‑clash sound that matches Musashi’s brutal fighting style. The developers also emphasized character contrast: Ganryu’s movements were crafted to be sleek and even erotic, highlighting his vanity against Musashi’s rough, powerful combat.
