Cape Breton declares state of emergency following severe flooding
Severe flooding caused by torrential rainfall has devastated parts of Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, leading to a local state of emergency in Inverness, Richmond, and Victoria counties, as well as the Town of Port Hawkesbury. Over the weekend, rainfall exceeding 200 millimetres in some areas caused widespread infrastructure damage, including washed-out roads, destroyed culverts, and damaged bridges. At the peak of the storm, more than 120 roads were closed, and power outages affected approximately 40,000 residents.
The storm resulted in one confirmed fatality in Richmond County, where a 46-year-old woman was found dead in a flooded area. Emergency crews are currently working to restore access to isolated communities, such as River Bourgeois and areas near West Bay Road, where the St. Georges Channel bridge was washed away.
While rainfall has begun to ease in some areas, Environment Canada has warned that additional precipitation is possible through Monday, and saturated ground may lead to further flooding. Local authorities have established comfort centres and a municipal support line to assist residents during the recovery process.
