Cape Breton severe flooding and emergency response

Overview

Torrential rainfall exceeding 200 millimetres caused severe flooding across Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, prompting a state of emergency in Inverness, Richmond, and Victoria counties, as well as the Town of Port Hawkesbury. The storm resulted in one confirmed fatality in Richmond County and caused widespread infrastructure damage, including washed-out roads, destroyed culverts, and damaged bridges. At the height of the event, over 120 roads were closed and approximately 40,000 residents lost power.

As recovery efforts progressed, the Nova Scotia Department of Public Works reopened dozens of roads and made headway on West Bay Road to assist stranded residents. Despite some progress, major washouts in areas such as St. Peter’s required further repair time. The flooding also led to school closures across Victoria, Richmond, and Inverness counties.
