Cape Breton flooding isolates communities and damages infrastructure

Severe flooding and torrential rainfall in Cape Breton have caused significant infrastructure damage, leaving several communities isolated. The storm washed out roads, damaged culverts, and triggered widespread power outages, forcing vulnerable residents to rely on emergency crews for assistance.

Recovery efforts are currently underway. Nova Scotia’s Department of Public Works has reopened dozens of roads, and officials report that significant headway has been made on West Bay Road, allowing some stranded residents to travel with caution. However, major washouts remain in areas like St. Peter’s, which will require more time to repair.

The local state of emergency has also impacted education, leading to school closures in Victoria, Richmond, and Inverness counties.
