Volunteers such as a man identified only as Quentin have joined the work, preparing boats for a rapid evacuation if needed. Bartherotte says he leveraged contacts “up to Brigitte Macron” to keep the project moving. The fire, described as a “megafeu,” threatens the narrow strip of land between the Arcachon basin and the Atlantic Ocean, prompting a mix of criticism and admiration from residents, many of whom are fishermen and oyster farmers reluctant to leave their homes.
