Capital Regional District opens accessible paddle launch at Elk/Beaver Lake

The Capital Regional District (CRD) announced the opening of a new wheelchair‑accessible paddlecraft launch at the Brookleigh Boat Launch in Elk/Beaver Lake Regional Park, Greater Victoria, British Columbia. The facility features a ramp, a step‑free dock measuring 26 m by 2.6 m with a slip‑resistant surface, a partially submerged launch area with handrails, a seated transfer bench, pull‑out platform, overhead railings and straps, all designed to enable safe independent entry for paddlers of varying abilities.

The launch was designed, built and tested by local contractor Jenkins Marine together with the Recreation Adaptive Society. It forms part of the CRD’s broader effort to improve accessibility across its parks and trails, complementing existing amenities such as an accessible fishing pier and wheelchair‑friendly washrooms. The district notes that roughly one‑in‑five residents aged 15‑64 live with a disability, and the new launch aims to remove barriers to outdoor recreation for these community members.
