Cappadocia hot‑air balloon network to expand, boosting Turkish tourism

Nevşehir Governor Hüseyin Kök announced plans to enlarge the hot‑air balloon flight network in Cappadocia, adding routes over the Çat, Soğanlı and Ihlara valleys. The expansion aims to increase the number of daily flights and showcase more of the region’s historic and natural sites.

The governor highlighted the sector’s economic contribution, noting that balloon flights encourage visitors to stay one to two nights, thereby supporting hotels, restaurants and local businesses. In 2025, about 758,000 tourists are expected to fly in balloons over 223 days. Currently, 30 licensed operators employ 514 pilots—57 of whom are women—and operate 354 balloons.

Safety is overseen by the Turkish General Directorate of Civil Aviation, with at least 50 parameters checked before each flight. Kök stressed, "En az 50 parametreyle güvenlik sağlanıyor" ("Safety is ensured with at least 50 parameters"). He also said, "Gün doğumunda yüzlerce balon görsel bir şölen oluşturuyor" ("Hundreds of balloons create a visual spectacle at sunrise").

Visitors from Europe, the United States and especially East Asian countries such as China, Japan, Indonesia and Taiwan are drawn to the unique landscape, which Kök described as a natural beauty unmatched elsewhere.
