Entities: Cappadocia Balloon Festival · Mustafa Kenan Sarıtaş · Paşabağları Ören Yeri · Gökhan Yazgı · Filiz Kılıç
Overview
Turkey’s transport ministry recorded 89 million airline passengers in the first five months of 2026, a 4 % year‑on‑year rise. Cruise traffic stayed strong, with 169 vessels in May and a total of 324 ships bringing 455,580 passengers from January to May; June saw record visits such as Kuşadası’s Ege Port handling 95,393 visitors from 30 ships and Marmaris welcoming three mega‑cruisers carrying over 12,200 guests. The hot‑air balloon sector logged 13,000 flights and 308,000 passengers in the first half of 2026, operated by 71 licensed companies and about 530 balloons. Manufacturers exported 53 balloons, Egypt being the top buyer. In July the governor of Nevşehir announced new routes over the Çat, Soğanlı and Ihlara valleys to boost daily flights and overnight stays. The industry now employs 514 pilots (57 women) and runs 354 balloons subject to safety checks on at least 50 parameters. Cappadocia, a UNESCO World Heritage landscape, accounted for more than 80 % of Turkey’s balloon activity in the same period, with 11,954 flights over 92 days carrying 306,777 domestic and foreign tourists. The half‑year tally of 306,777 balloon passengers, over 80 % of national traffic, underscores Cappadocia’s dominance. In late July, the Cappadocia Balloon Festival’s Night Glow at Paşabağları lit dozens of balloons to music, attracting thousands and attended by Deputy Minister of Culture and Tourism Gökhan Yazgı, MHP parliamentarian Filiz Kılıç, Avanos mayor Mustafa Kenan Sarıtaş and Cappadocia Area President Cem Aslanbay, highlighting the region’s natural and cultural heritage. Operators emphasize compliance with Turkish Directorate General of Civil Aviation requirements, including flight permits, certified pilots, weather‑based authorisations, Air Operator Certificates, equipment inspections and liability insurance.
