Car fires erupt on Hungary's M1 and M5 motorways
On August 2, 2026, a passenger car caught fire on the M1 motorway near Tatabánya, Hungary. The vehicle was engulfed in flames, but the occupants escaped before the fire spread. A video recorded by a passer‑by shows the burning car and the scene; authorities have not announced any criminal investigation.
Later the same day, another car ignited on the M5 motorway near Kecskemét, close to an Auchan store. Video footage submitted by a reader shows the vehicle fully ablaze and smoke visible from a distance. Firefighters arrived shortly after the blaze was reported. No injuries were reported in either incident.
