Traffic incidents and disruptions in Hungary

In early August 2026, two separate vehicle fires occurred on Hungarian motorways. On August 2, a passenger car caught fire on the M1 motorway near Tatabánya, and a second vehicle ignited on the M5 motorway near Kecskemét. In both instances, occupants escaped or no injuries were reported. By late August, traffic disruptions across the Hungarian motorway network increased due to a combination of heavy end-of-summer travel and multiple accidents. On August 30, significant delays were reported on the M5 following a three-car collision near Lajosmizse, and on the M7 due to a vehicle fire near Siófok and a barrier strike near Szabadbattyán. Other incidents involving collisions and road closures were reported on the M3, Main Road 31, and other regional routes. On August 30, disruptions intensified as a large wildfire near the 77 main road in Tapolca spread to a pine forest and a solar park. Emergency response efforts involved numerous volunteer fire departments and two military helicopters. Heavy smoke from the fire necessitated traffic restrictions on the 77 main road. Further congestion was reported on August 30, with M5 jams exceeding eight kilometers following a three-car collision near Lajosmizse and a truck hitting a guardrail near Kiskunfélegyháza. The M7 saw congestion of over five kilometers near Szabadbattyán. Additional incidents included a four-vehicle collision causing a total closure on the 31 main road, collisions in Győr, Eger, and Tiszabura, and a truck carrying pigs overturning on the 63 main road in Cecén. By early September, congestion persisted on major routes. On the M1 motorway, heavy delays of approximately 12 kilometers were reported between Komárom and Tata in both directions. An accident at kilometer 88 caused the closure of the outer lane toward Hegyeshalom, while delays of nearly 10 kilometers were noted at kilometer 61 for drivers heading toward Budapest.
