CAR-T cell therapy shows promise in treating refractory rheumatoid arthritis

The COMPARE pilot clinical trial, conducted at Charité in Berlin and published in Nature Medicine, has demonstrated promising results using CAR-T cell technology to treat severe, refractory rheumatoid arthritis. While originally developed for cancer, this technology was applied to six patients who had previously failed up to eight different targeted or biological therapies.

The treatment involves genetically reprogramming a patient's own cells to selectively eliminate the memory B cells responsible for autoimmune inflammation. Results from the first phase show a substantial reduction in disease activity across all participants. After one year of follow-up, three patients achieved sustained remission without the need for further pharmacological treatment for rheumatoid arthritis.
