Clinical applications of CAR-T cell therapy

Overview

CAR-T cell therapy is demonstrating expanding clinical utility across different medical applications. Research published in the New England Journal of Medicine indicates that the therapy can enable safe pregnancies for women with severe autoimmune diseases, such as systemic lupus erythematosus. An international study documented 14 pregnancies and eight births where mothers experienced no disease relapse and infants developed healthy immune systems.

In oncology, the therapy is also transforming treatment for aggressive lymphomas, specifically for patients with refractory or relapsed disease. Clinical trials like ZUMA-1 and JULIET have shown that reprogramming a patient’s own immune cells can achieve long-term disease control in cases where traditional options, such as chemotherapy or stem cell transplants, may no longer be viable.
