Carabineros de Chile face high absenteeism amid operational reports
The Carabineros de Chile are facing scrutiny over operational results and high rates of personnel absenteeism. In Vallenar, the 3rd Police Station presented its 2025 public account, reporting over 40,000 procedures, 1,274 arrests, and the seizure of more than 780 kilograms of drugs. The report highlighted close coordination with municipal security to protect the commune's 54,000 residents.
Separately, a report from the University of Chile's Center for Studies in Citizen Security revealed a structural absenteeism problem within the force. Data shows that in 2024, personnel averaged 25.3 days of absence per year, a significant increase from the 16.8-day average in 2018. The absenteeism is most severe among lower-ranking officers, with the 'Carabinero' rank averaging 41.8 days of absence annually.
Mental and behavioral disorders account for over 37% of common illness leaves and more than 40% of professional illness leaves. In response, Public Security Undersecretary Pilar Giannini stated the government aims to address the issue through shift changes, improved work environments, and mental health prevention to increase officer availability on the streets.
