Chilean police security and crime trends

Chilean police force Carabineros has implemented various local security measures and reported regional crime statistics.

In Cartagena, the municipal government and Carabineros established a cooperation agreement to provide equipment, such as off-road bicycles and cameras, to enhance patrols in coastal and tourist areas. In rural Linares, authorities introduced preventive measures specifically aimed at curbing ‘abigeato’, or livestock theft, by advising residents on better identification and perimeter security.

Recent operational data from other regions shows mixed trends. In Longaví, police recorded over 11,000 procedures during the 2025 period, including hundreds of apprehensions and numerous traffic violations. In the Tarapacá region, July 2026 data indicated significant increases in drug trafficking, public consumption of alcohol and drugs, and the receiving of stolen goods. However, the same region reported decreases in property theft, public disorder, and serious injuries, while domestic violence remains a high-frequency issue.

In August 2026, police operations across the country resulted in several high-profile arrests. In Carahue, the PDI apprehended Rosamel Fierro, a fugitive since 2021 wanted for a violent robbery against forestry workers. In the Vicuña commune, authorities arrested César Rodríguez, a 27-year-old Venezuelan national, for the murder of Anne Alexander Gray, an American resident. The PDI also seized over 800 kilograms of drugs, including cannabis and cocaine, in the Metropolitan Region, valued at approximately $2.4 billion CLP.

Other reported arrests include the detention of two men for firearm-related homicides in Coronel and San Pedro de la Paz, as well as a man in Mulchén for domestic violence. In San Felipe, four youths were arrested for vehicle theft.
