Carabinieri mark 212th anniversary with ceremony in Reggio Calabria

On 5 June 2026 the Carabinieri celebrated the 212th anniversary of their founding in Reggio Calabria. The ceremony took place on the Falcomatà waterfront and at the Arena dello Stretto Ciccio Franco, with General Salvatore Luongo, commander of the force, presiding.

Minister for Defence Isabella Rauti highlighted the event’s blend of tradition and operational capability, noting the oath of loyalty taken by the 144th cohort of cadet carabinieri named after Lorenzo Gennari, a Medal of Gold for Military Valor recipient. A tactical ship‑boarding simulation was performed by the Special Intervention Group (GIS) on the vessel Athena, followed by a parachute display from the 1st Tuscania Regiment’s sports parachuting section. A commemorative postage stamp featuring the monument “Per la gente, tra la gente” – depicting a carabiniere protecting a child – was issued, underscoring the force’s historic role.

Political figures, including sub‑secretary for the Interior Wanda Ferrosi and Lega senator Tilde Minasi, praised the Carabinieri’s contribution to national security and community protection, linking the celebration to broader themes of legality, safety and national identity.
