Carabinieri celebrate 212th foundation anniversary across Italy

On 5 June 2026 the Italian national gendarmerie marked the 212th anniversary of its foundation with ceremonies in dozens of towns, including Rome’s Villa Borghese, Bologna, Asti, Bracciano, Foggia, Salerno, Pavia, Livorno, Ravenna, Verbania and others. Local authorities – civil, military and religious leaders, mayors, senators and school representatives – attended the events, which featured religious masses, flag‑laying, honours for distinguished carabinieri and public exhibitions such as the “Villaggio Arma” in Rome.

The gatherings also served as a platform for reporting recent law‑enforcement results. Regional legions highlighted rises in theft, fraud against the elderly and the use of knives by minors, while noting reductions in homicides and domestic‑violence arrests. Anti‑drug operations over the past year produced seizures of over 500 kg of substances and dozens of arrests, with the Reggio‑Emilia unit reporting 45 drug‑related arrests and 108 kg of hashish seized. Across the country, the Carabinieri processed more than 14 000 denunciations, conducted tens of thousands of patrols, and maintained a high proportion of arrests relative to reported crimes.

The celebrations underscored the Carabinieri’s role as a “presidio fondamentale of legality, security and proximity to citizens,” a point reiterated by regional officials such as Lazio President Francesco Rocca.
