Carbon Capture Gains Momentum in Agriculture and Maritime Sectors

Irrigated agriculture can boost crop yields and increase the amount of carbon dioxide converted into plant material, sequestering carbon in soils and reducing nitrous‑oxide emissions when nitrogen is applied efficiently. Precise irrigation methods such as drip and micro‑emitters further raise "crop per drop" ratios, helping farmers produce more food, fiber and fuel while enhancing long‑term carbon storage.

On the maritime side, onboard carbon capture and storage (OCCS) systems are moving toward commercial use. A full‑scale installation on the Solvang ethylene carrier Clipper Eris, fitted with a Wärtsilä capture unit, has demonstrated capture of roughly 50 tonnes of CO₂ per day, removing about 70 % of exhaust‑engine emissions. The technology is being incorporated into new gas carriers under construction at Hyundai Heavy Industries for delivery in 2026‑27, with costs estimated at $54‑76 per tonne of CO₂ captured. Remaining challenges include the energy required for capture, storage capacity, CO₂ off‑loading, port reception and full regulatory recognition by bodies such as the IMO.
