Maritime onboard carbon capture progress

Overview

In late July 2026 Singapore's Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation reported that its Project CAPTURED achieved two regulatory breakthroughs. The captured CO₂ was recognised under the EU Emissions Trading System, allowing verified tonnes to be deducted from required allowances, and the International Maritime Organization gave in‑principle support to carbon mineralisation as a permanent storage route. The pilot demonstrated a full value chain—from onboard capture to ship‑to‑ship off‑load, land transport and conversion into stable mineral products—while achieving a 7.9 % net greenhouse‑gas reduction.

A week later reporting highlighted that onboard carbon capture and storage (OCCS) systems were moving toward commercial deployment. A full‑scale installation on the Solvang ethylene carrier Clipper Eris captured about 50 tonnes of CO₂ per day, removing roughly 70 % of exhaust emissions. Similar units are being fitted to new gas carriers under construction for delivery in 2026‑27, with estimated capture costs of $54‑76 per tonne.
