Carbon footprint measurement and Direct Air Capture technologies
Carbon footprints measure the total volume of greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide, emitted directly or indirectly by individuals, organizations, or nations. These gases contribute to global warming by trapping heat in the atmosphere. To standardize the impact of different gases, emissions are often expressed in tonnes of CO2 equivalent (CO2e), accounting for the varying global warming potential of substances like methane.
Direct Air Capture (DAC) technology is emerging as a method to mitigate industrial pollution by extracting CO2 directly from the atmosphere through chemical processes. Once captured, the carbon can be safely stored or repurposed to create synthetic fuels and other products. For instance, the company Climeworks utilizes geothermal energy to power its DAC systems, integrating renewable energy into the carbon removal process. The implementation of DAC could support international emission reduction goals and foster job creation within the green technology sector.
