Direct Air Capture technology development
Overview
Direct Air Capture (DAC) technology is being developed as a method to mitigate industrial pollution by extracting CO2 directly from the atmosphere for storage or repurposing.
At the Mammoth facility in Iceland, the company Climeworks has reported doubling its CO2 capture throughput and reducing operating costs per ton by half. These improvements were achieved by enhancing sorbent capacity and longevity, alongside refining mechanical designs and operational processes. Climeworks intends to test next-generation DAC technology at the Mammoth site in early 2027, which laboratory results suggest could offer a tenfold improvement in sorbent lifetime and a fourfold increase in process densification.
