Cardano Founder Charles Hoskinson Warns Bitcoin Governance May Fail Against Quantum Threat

Charles Hoskinson, co‑founder of Cardano, said that Bitcoin could lose its position as the leading cryptocurrency if its governance cannot coordinate a rapid upgrade to defend against future quantum‑computing attacks. He noted that Bitcoin’s reliance on elliptic‑curve cryptography makes it vulnerable to a sufficiently powerful quantum computer, a risk acknowledged by the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology. Hoskinson contrasted Bitcoin’s informal upgrade process, which requires broad consensus among developers, miners and users, with Cardano’s on‑chain voting system that allows ADA holders to approve changes more efficiently.

He also cited recent bridge attacks and broader security challenges in the crypto industry, urging the adoption of zero‑knowledge technologies and decentralized insurance mechanisms. Hoskinson highlighted Cardano’s recent v11 hard‑fork, implemented entirely through community voting, and previewed the forthcoming Leios upgrade aimed at dramatically increasing transaction speed. He criticized Ethereum’s governance model and described its L2 solutions as “parasitic.”
