Sleep and exercise research highlights optimal health habits
Recent scientific findings highlight the critical relationship between sleep, exercise, and overall health. A study from the University of Tsukuba suggests that even 10 minutes of light running can immediately improve mood and executive functions, such as attention and cognitive control, by activating the prefrontal cortex.
Regarding sleep duration, research from the National Taiwan University indicates that sleeping between seven and eight hours per night is associated with the lowest mortality rates. Conversely, sleeping more than nine hours is linked to a higher mortality risk than sleeping fewer than six hours. Experts also suggest that while regular physical activity can act as a protective factor against the negative effects of insufficient sleep, it cannot replace the necessity of adequate rest.
Other lifestyle factors can influence sleep quality. Consuming kiwi before bed has been linked to improved sleep onset, duration, and efficiency. Additionally, daytime naps are noted as a tool to enhance physical and cognitive performance in athletes. For optimal sleep hygiene, specialists recommend sleeping on the left side to prevent acid reflux and snoring, maintaining a dark, quiet, and temperature-controlled environment, and establishing routines to disconnect from digital devices.
