Cardiologist José Abellán explains mechanisms of hypertension

Cardiologist José Abellán has explained the physiological mechanisms behind hypertension and potential methods for its management. According to Abellán, hypertension is driven by an increase in the sympathetic nervous system, which raises heart rate, contraction force, and causes vasoconstriction.

This physiological shift also impacts the kidneys, leading to increased sodium and fluid retention, which subsequently raises blood volume and arterial pressure. To combat these effects, medical interventions include beta-blockers to reduce heart rate and contraction force, or drugs that target blood vessels and renal functions. Additionally, techniques such as renal denervation can be used to reduce sodium and fluid retention without the use of medication.
