Cardiologist José Abellán warns snoring raises heart attack and stroke risk

Cardiologist José Abellán explains that snoring is not a harmless habit but a sign of partial obstruction of the upper airway during sleep. Persistent vibration of throat tissues can develop into obstructive sleep apnea, which lowers oxygen levels and stresses the heart and brain. Over time this increases the risk of hypertension, heart attacks, strokes, arrhythmias, and cognitive problems.

He recommends lifestyle changes to reduce snoring and associated health risks: losing excess weight, exercising regularly, avoiding alcohol and sedatives at night, quitting smoking, and following a light Mediterranean diet low in ultra‑processed foods. These measures improve airway openness, oxygen flow, and overall cardiovascular health.
