Cardiovascular health indicators and dietary habits linked to longevity
Long-term research and new clinical studies have highlighted key factors and dietary habits that influence cardiovascular health and longevity.
A decades-long study from the Helsinki Businessmen Study, published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology, tracked 2,690 Finnish men. Researchers found that men who maintained five specific health indicators at age 42—smoking cessation, healthy body weight, blood pressure below 140, controlled cholesterol, and healthy blood sugar levels—had a 41.9% chance of reaching age 90. In contrast, those with none of these indicators had only a 6.8% chance of reaching that age.
Complementing these findings, a six-week clinical study published in the journal Nutrients examined the effects of whole grains on 68 adults. The study found that oats were linked to a reduction in LDL cholesterol, while barley helped lower diastolic blood pressure and markers of inflammation. These results suggest that incorporating oats and barley into a daily diet can provide significant benefits for managing cardiovascular risk factors.
