Caretta caretta sea turtle nesting sites discovered in Sicily and Marche

Recent sightings of Caretta caretta sea turtle nesting sites have been reported along the Italian coast, highlighting the species' presence in both Sicily and the Marche region.

In Scoglitti, Sicily, at Costa Fenicia, biologists monitored a protected nest. During a careful excavation, some hatchlings were found trapped beneath the sand, unable to reach the surface, while others successfully made their way toward the sea. The area had been cordoned off to prevent interference from beachgoers.

In Senigallia, a nest was discovered at a local beach establishment. This event is considered exceptional for the area, with the last significant nesting in the Marche region recorded in 2019. Following the discovery, local authorities and biologists from the Fondazione Cetacea ETS implemented protection measures, including fencing the area to ensure the safety of the nesting site and prevent accidental trampling.
